Reflection

My writing process went pretty smoothly throughout the crafting of this personal essay. I find the topic at hand very interesting yet very frightening at the same time. I started with rereading the assigned chapters of the Klein book, highlighting and underlining pieces I thought made good sense to include in this paper. There were a lot of profound things Klein pointed out in her book, which gave me a starting point when finding sources. From there, I looked up sources based on the criteria given in the assignment, on websites such as the New York Times, and Verge. I thoroughly read each, and took notes as I read, about things that interested me in particular throughout the articles I gathered. I also found an academic source through the library at UMD, which included a different perspective on how people think about climate change. That furthered my interest in the topic and made it easier to write about.

From there, I thought about my audience. Realistically speaking, I know it would likely only be the professor in this case, however I thought about who I wanted to reach. If I were to actually publish this as a post I’d want others to read, I would want it to reach as many people as possible, but especially those who are or were in the same boat as I am, harboring different thoughts or ideals about things that didn’t match their parents’ views or their peer’s views. I’d want them to know they aren’t alone in the way that they were thinking and that their way of thinking is important. Thus, I told the story that I did in the beginning about my formative years and how I made the transition from thinking the same way as my parents to thinking for myself. I would hope that this would convey to those types of people that it is most definitely okay to think for yourself. I also chose this topic, because being such a young person, these are issues in our society that will affect me and my generation heavily as well as any future generations to come. Having done even more research on this topic now for the purpose of this paper, I almost feel even more afraid or frightened about the future, but also a little sliver of hope considering it  does seem like it is starting to click in peoples’ brains that this is something that is important and needs to be given attention.

My writing over the semester has allowed me to express myself and my views about citizenship in our communities and society, and while not a whole lot of it has aligned with my topic of choice, it led me to this because it facilitated thought about how I felt about other issues in the world and what I think should be done about them. It is just as important to look at how we treat our environment as it is to treat our fellow humans with respect regardless of race or ethnicity. It has allowed me to learn even more about myself as many previous classes have, and about my ideas about society and government, and why it is so important for people of all walks of life and age to really pay attention to what is going on around them politically, economically, and environmentally.

I have learned that I can also write in a manner that isn’t such dry, scientific writing like I have to do for all of my psych courses, and I actually had some fun writing this as I could definitely be a little more creative in the process. Same goes for the construction of the e-portfolio: I love web design, and it afforded me some room to be creative and construct a space that made sense to house my personal thoughts packaged in these assignments. These assignments also allowed me to explore my writing style further and consider doing more blog posts about the things I care about politically or just in life in general. I feel as though this composition class has helped me to hone my non-scientific writing skills while also giving me an outlet to discuss and stand up for the things I believe in, as well as hear others out about what they think, too. And while I may not have always agreed with the other students in the class about certain issues or about their ideas on things, it is still a valuable experience to remain open minded and try to understand where some of these people are coming from.
